Sox sign Mike Olt to minor league deal

Mike Olt signed to Minor League deal

The Sox just signed Mike Olt to a minor league deal this morning. Mike Olt didn’t play in the majors last season after signing a deal with the Padres. If all goes well and he can make a difference he’ll start the season off in Pawtucket. Olt has hit above .200 just once in his 4 big league seasons and that again was only a .203 batting average. He’s essentially a boom or bust type of player. I doubt he’ll make the 25 man roster especially given his current ability.

He could be a suitable replacement for Panda if he goes down or needs a break every 6-7th game but I wouldn’t count on it for now. No one would say that Mike Olt is the long term replacement for the Red Sox even if he is only 27 years old. His only good or decent year was 4 years ago in 2012 playing for the Cubs and that’s being extremely generous when I say good or decent. Olt hit 12 home runs and knocked in 33 runs while only hitting .160.
