Boston Red Sox name starter for Opening Day 2017

Red Sox tab Rick Porcello as Opening Day starter vs Pirates on April 3rd

The Boston Red Sox have finally disclosed to their fans who will pitch on Opening Day. The reigning Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello has been tabbed to start the first game for the season for the Sox. I’ll say this to start, it was between him and Sale. Price had a bit of a lousy season last year after putting up pretty good numbers but not $30 million a year numbers. Chris Sale will be the man to watch but it makes total sense as to why Porcello will start.

Case and point, Rick Porcello has earned it. All things aside, the guy put up numbers in all forms. He managed to win 22 games in a loaded AL East division. With Rick Porcello, Chris Sale & David Price when he returns from the disabled list, you’re going to have a set of pitchers that will really challenge hitters. More importantly, I think you’re going to see these 3 guys go out there and challenge each other. John Farrell no doubt has a lot of faith in Porcello and that faith has been rewarded. I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t turn his first game out in a W.

When David Price comes back, it’ll beg the question. What should the true rotation be in Boston? Porcello first obviously, Chris Sale would go second, no questions there but, who goes 3rd, 4th & 5th? David Price is out of commission for the time being but he’ll be back and will get the 3rd spot unless he blows everyone away and earns the 2nd spot. We know that we’ve got Drew Pomeranz and Eduardo Rodriguez available and knuckleballer Steven Wright will most likely be the 5th man. Again we ask, who goes 3rd? 4th? Who finishes out the rotation?

You’ve got to go with the guys that have the experience and most to offer. I think the rotation will go like so. First out we’ve got Rick Porcello. Second in the rotation will be Chris Sale. Third, you’ve got Drew Pomeranz. Fourth, you’re gonna with Eduardo Rodriguez. Finally, we’ll close it out with Steven Wright. When Price does come back, he slots in to pitch 3rd in the rotation with Pomeranz & Rodriguez each sliding down one spot. Wright would get relegated to the bullpen. All in all, it’s shaping up to be a great Sox season and we’re less than 3 weeks away until Opening Day!
