Boston Red Sox draft Tanner Houck with 24th overall pick in 2017 draft
Three years after Tanner Houck got drafted in the 12th round by the Blue Jays, the Red Sox drafted him with their 1st round selection. The Sox have never been shy about drafting pitchers early. The Sox drafted lefty Jason Groome with the 12th overall pick in last years draft, a steal considering he was projected to be a top three selection, and also drafted left handed pitcher Trey Ball with the 7th overall pick back in 2013.
Aside from throwing a no hitter, he saw his numbers steadily get better in comparing his two seasons in college. In Houck’s freshman year, he posted an 8 – 5 record with a 3.49 ERA and struck out 91 batters over 100 1/3rd innings. His following season, Houck posted a 5 – 6 record with a 2.99 ERA and managed 106 strike outs. His junior year saw his numbers falter but still managed a solid 9.0 K/9 ratio.
Houck also has a unique tattoo on his left wrist. To commemorate getting drafted back in 2014, he got a “Round 12, Pick 354, Toronto Blue Jays 2014,” to motivate him to get to the next level. Maybe the future holds a potential World Series Championship tattoo!
