Red Sox: Pomeranz pounded against Brew Crew – lose 11 – 7

Boston Red Sox pitcher Drew Pomeranz got destroyed in 1st inning of game against the Milwaukee Brewers

Every pitcher has a bad outing every once in a while. Unfortunately for Drew Pomeranz, he got shelled in just an inning of work. Pom gave up 5 runs on 4 hits including two run shots to Eric Thames and Keon Broxton. Former Red Sox 3rd baseman Travis Shaw knocked in a run with an RBI single in between the homers for good measure.

Pom finished with one strike out, the only positive in the inning. While people want to rip on Pomeranz for his performance, the Brewers have scored 33 first inning runs, the most in the NL. What’s the Brewers goal? Come out with runs and fast. Worked out pretty well as it ended up being the difference in the game where the Sox lost by four runs.

Outside the 1st inning, Pomeranz allowed one run on three hits walking one and striking out one. Pom just didn’t have his A game today. That breaks the streak of three straight starts where he pitched at least five innings and gave up no more than two runs. It’s just the second start for him allowing more than two runs all season long. His ERA has shot back up to 5.23 for the second time this season. Pomeranz also sports a 3 – 2 record in six appearances. He is tied for the team lead in wins with three with Chris Sale.

Pomeranz did get an extra day of rest but I think we should chalk it up to the Brewers just got on some great pitches and Thames is shamelessly demolishing balls against all pitchers after having not played in the majors for three seasons. The Brewers hadn’t seen Pomeranz since 2012 where he pitched 5 innings and allowed his trademark two runs and struck out five.

For his career against the Brewers while it is a small sample size, hasn’t done great. Pomeranz has given up 8 runs on 9 hits in 9 innings with 5 walks and 8 strike outs. He adds an 0 – 1 record with an 8.00 ERA against the Brew crew. Just not his team and not his night. The Sox look to even out the series with Kyle Kendrick on the hill against Chase Anderson for the Brewers. Kendrick will look to perform better after a rocky start.
